This new tactic will not work for Singapore, in my opinion.

First, Singlish is a deeply entrenched culture that forms a viable part of Singapore Identity. Being a young nation with no longstanding and rich cultural history to speak of, Singlish can be a starting point for us Singaporeans. To launch a war against Singlish is akin to launching a campaign to eradicate the Singapore Identity and compromise the social fabric, something close to the hearts of many Singaporeans.

Second, if schools can still teach proper English - written and orally - why deprive Singaporeans of the freedom of language outside formal education? Young Singaporeans are discerning enough to know when to use English at the right time, Singlish at another right time, depending on circumstances. For example, we may communicate in Singlish among our peers and relatives, but when we speak with foreigners, especially Westerners for instance, we do have the consciousness to use proper English lest they don't understand us.

Third, for some time long ago, the MIW government has already started on clamping down on Singlish, so may I ask, has it succeeded at all? This new initiative by MCYS merely shows that past campaigns aren't successful, thus need this new campaign. What makes MCYS think that it'll succeed this time?

If this campaign is to be launched, i hope VB will address the following issue:

1. Please think carefully the feasibility of such a campaign, and measure the threat of Singlish to Singapore's well-being. Is Singlish really a threat at all? Or will it actually help cement a unique social fabric of Singapore?

2. Please also take note that Singaporeans are better educated these days and we are able to discern the right moments to apply our languages. We, being better educated, do not need a government to teach us on how we communicate. There is only so much a ruling party wants to pervade the lives of Singaporeans. Please note the limits.

3. Instead of launching this campaign, please do not divert attention. Many Singaporeans still demand a satisfactory accountability from MCYS as to how the approx SGD400 million is being used in the recent YOG. This issue, which relates to the common gripes of Singaporeans struggling to cope with rising living standards and not to forget the destitute poor who can actually benefit from the money, is still more important than the issue about Singlish.

We speak good English at the right time, and speak Singlish at another. I hope the MIWs stop treating us like daft Singaporeans.
